How to Bounce Back from a Lay-off (TCE Style)

Oh no! That dreaded meeting in the office at the end of the day (Thursdays and Friday’s are the preferred days.) Have you ever heard this, “…In spite of all your efforts and a job “well done”, an “executive decision” was made to cut cost and reduce expenditure. It’s not a reflection on you and your hard work, it’s the economy, funding, etc.”   In other words, you have just been laid-off!   Then those immediate feelings of disbelief “no this is NOT happening to me”, panic or anxiety kick in. So what do YOU do? I mean, what CAN YOU Do? Never fear, the Career Engineer is here with some “Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared” tips and booster to help you bounce back from the Lay-off.

  • Access Where You Are: Get a realistic handle on your career power & cash resources (60, 90, 180 day plans are a good idea). Start developing a job search plan, tap into you vetted contacts and get busy. Connect with your local unemployment agency to see where you stand in terms of unemployment benefits and additional resources/help.
  • If it’s Broke, Fix It: Revisit your Brand (resume, Social platform, connections) Update with Power Now! Yes you can do it yourself with books and YouTube training or you can hire a professional career strategist who knows how to help you SELL your brand and close the deal.
  • Job Development: Niche Boards and job fairs are the best: Check out National Job Fairs for a list of fairs in your area and the Best 50 Job Boards .   Also view your Economic development agencies, Chamber Listings or visit the Library to get information on companies and points of contacts in your area.
  • Network for REAL: Find vetted, boutique, solid gatherings where REALatioships, Access and Opportunity shine. Be careful not to execute an everywhere and anywhere strategy but attend events or gatherings where the people you want to get in front of…attend. TCE Career & Biz Summit is happening Oct 22, you may want to check this out since decision makers will be there in the career and biz space.

ALL That Glitters Is NOT GOLD (it Could Be …RUST)

Gold Image for blogEarlier this month I posted a simple “impromptu” thought on my Facebook profile that seems to have generated a tremendous amount of interest.  I had a feeling (yeah I am getting very feeling oriented this days), that many of the good and amazing people I have none over the years…are getting themselves in positioned to be:  HUSTLED.

Here is a copy of what I posted on Facebook earlier today.

Just a Thought: All That Glitters is NOT Gold, Be Cautions of the “Quick, Fast & in a Hurry” Tongues, Fake places and Stolen spaces. In short folks, “Be careful Out There”.

The sad thing is…it’s not their fault (well not all of it!)  It’s almost like the sheep are just doing their thing peacefully on the hillside…and here comes those gosh darn wolves.   Of course, sometimes the sheep are hypnotized by the glare of the wolves coat:  its bling, its shine,  sweet words and the sugar-coated promises.

When you feel “anxious or unaware ” in your life, you may FEEL like you can only move forward when you have the support of a crowd.  Any crowd…even a fake one.  So to that I say … (Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!).   The REAL problem is that wolves/false crowds prey on the ANXIOUS  and the UN-AWARE.  Do YOU know people like this…is it …YOU?

It gets worse…the “wolf” crowd will applause you, sing your praise, say they support you and buy your stuff (well initially).  Now this situation may allow you to think that you are safe from harm and secure.  But “all that glitters is not gold” you could be in a very dangerous space clouded by a false perception.  Why…because when you are a SHEEP in a crowd of WOLVES…9 times at of 10…YOU are on the menu! THEY are smiling, hugging you and at the same time licking their lips…as THEY prepare… for a FEAST aka YOU.  So how do YOU avoid getting Career, Life or Business Hustled?

Try these TCE “REALationships” steps below!

  • SEED/FRUIT:  Inspect the SEED, test the SOIL & check out the FRUIT (the REAL FRUIT, not the scripted stuff)
  • BIG EGO, SMALL HEART:  Ego’s overkill the words “I/Me”.  The heart speaks words such as  “We & CommUNITY”.
  • ALL IS VANITY:  Watch for OVERKILL of compliments in some cases,  folks are trying to PUFF YOU UP for the slaughter!
  • TO GOOD TO BE TRUE :  It is! Too many violins playing, sparrows flying around singing; listen to your gut & run
  • GOT STICKY POWER:  Are they consistently in the same form; or is the business reinventing or renaming game going on…again?

Would love to get your comments below directly on this blog on what you think about this topic.

Hey TCE, What Are Employers Looking For in 2016?

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared! Welcome to the next 52 Monday mornings of the New Year. Forecasts are sharing positive job growth and hiring news this year! In fact, according to my, TCEJobStop there were over 800K new job openings listed 7 days prior to this post. Proof positive that companies are looking for great talent in this new year.  But the REAL question is…will you be one of them!

Never fear, The Career Engineer is here to share “What’s HOT in the Career Space in 2016.”

  1. Use of Technology innovation: The ability to command technology, understand data and analytics are a big deal in the 2016 job market. It’s not enough to just know WHAT it is…you have to know HOW to use it…the RIGHT way.

  1. PALS is STILL King: Remember your reputation will out weigh a resume..anyday!  So our TCE coined “Performance, Accomplishments and Leadership” aka PALS is still in effect.  Bottom-line, today’s employers want PALS. if you don’t have it, then you are OUT!

  1. Skills vs. School: Hear me folks, a college degrees is vital but it’s not everything. Certifications and/or “proof positive” performance of “in-demand” skills are what employers are looking for.  Don’t be paper WISE and skills foolish. In fact, I believe you should have…both!

  1. Mobility is Key: Candidates who can truly function “in business” with mobile devices/technology to work efficiently and effectively are in demand. This is beyond social sharing and Twitter.  It’s  REALLY about doing more with less AND still being ACCURATE , EFFICIENT and FAST. (Yep, welcome to the New World).

  1. Who is Hiring:  Our aging population has created a big demand for health care related jobs and technology to support that industry. But it’s not the only popular industry, keep your eyes open for other grow sectors listed in this article Top 30 Fastest Growing Industries.

Destiny Stalled? The POWER of DISCONNECTIONS

The Career EngineerWithout a doubt, powerful, purposeful and positioned
connections are the required fuel to secure hidden opportunities in the 21st century marketplace.
We’ve been taught to hone in on your REAL connection/networking skills in order to increase our payday and opportunities. This is not only true for “traditional” networking where “human technology” is king (i.e. dinner/coffee meetings) but also for our social media power venues where “cyber” time is a critical commodity.

But what if, after much work and cultivation, you discover that your network is NOT working for you any longer? You are attending meetup, after-hour events, sharing resources with your “network”, investing your time currency, others are benefitting…but you are stalled!   Is it possible that the very people, places, data and things that are connected to us and after investing countless hours of time, talents and treasures…could be holding us back? The ultimate question, “Are we suffering from “stalled out or simply unpowered” connections AND have those connections stunted our ability to live and work in our divine destiny?

As we move forwarded in this New Year, perhaps the true focus of our networking should NO LONGER be acquiring or keeping connections that have out lived their value. As an entrepreneur who has built the TCE brand on global networking, I truly believe that the REAL message is not making MORE CONNECTIONS, but the understanding of the POWER of DISCONNECTIONS.  Now is the time to discover and “ACT ON” which connections should be UNPLUGGED in order for our destinies to be revealed.

Not sure how to identify a contact that needs a dis-connection from you?  Here are some TCE steps to determine if a disconnection is REQUIRED in order for you to meet your DESTINY!

  • Time Spent versus Time Invested: In all of our relationships or REALationship® (as we call them in TCE land), we need to be about “the business” of understanding Return on Investment (ROI). You can make more money, buy more things, but the allotment of time is something you NEVER get back.   When you SPEND time in a relation, you are in a consumer mindset (hence the word CONSUME). When you invest time in a relationship…you expect something back (hence the word investment.) If you are finding yourself spending MORE time (follow-ups, recharging, reworking)…this may be a sign from heaven…that it’s time to go.   Mr. Alfred Edmond Jr, Sr.VP/Editor-at-Large of BlackEnterprise, shared this valuable lesson with me on our TCE Radio Show some years back. He was happy to invest his time, as he KNEW the return on investment would be priceless.

TCE Power Statement: Learn to Invest Your Time Versus Spending It…There IS a difference.

  • Hunger versus Satisfaction: My granddaddy said, “A starving man can’t feed a hungry man, but a plump man…can!” If your circles of connections or influence are more than 50% starving folks who are FEEDING on your substance…you are in big trouble. In fact, that’s not a connection, but a chow line…and you are the main course. In order for you to reach and fulfill your destiny you need to be fed substance that you don’t currently have. Feeling hungry all the time…and your networks can’t or won’t feed you…sounds like it’s time to go!

TCE Power Statement: In 2015, Leave the MILK Alone, Time for You to Get Some MEAT.

  • Talking versus Doing: Listen to your connections…I mean REALLY listen to what they are saying. How much of the conversation reflects on accomplishments first, then talk later? Or are they skewed the other way around shouting zero accomplishments and talk only. Are they doing anything, creating positive change or generating “new” ideas? In this economy, purpose, performance, passion and profits have a renewed focus. If your networking circles are lacking in ANY of these 4P’s, it may be time for you to “re-check the connection.”

TCE Power Statement: “Stop Talking…DO SOMETHING!”

“Ah a New Job! The BEST Gift You Can Get!!”

All I want for Christmas is a brand new Job! Heard that the job hunt and connections REALLY slow down during the holidays? NOT! In fact it’s a GREAT time to either PREPARE or MAKE critical connections. The Career Engineer stops by to share some “post-turkey day” Career Boosters Tips during the holiday season & New Year.

Try these TCE boosters this season:

  • The Holiday Parties are Great Networking Events: I love to see career seekers in the room with business owners and decision makers. Now that’s a great party! check out holiday events powered by your chamber, professional organizations, alumni, family and friends.  Don’t forget the TCE Career & Biz Network

  • Let’ Them Drink Eggnog & Eat Cake: While your competition is drinking eggnog – you can ROCK your “A Game”: Polish up your brand and source your top 10, 30, or 50 organizations YOU want to work for and go for it! Yes you can Google Search, but why not try this gift — unplug this season and visit your friendly neighborhood Library.

TCE Shares “THE REAL SCOOP ON PERISCOPE”

“Let’s Talk About PERISCOPE ETIQUETTE, TIPS, TRICKS & TRENDS”

The Career Engineer

So what’s the SCOOP on PERISCOPE?  Well as an addicted “scoper” (that’s what we call ourselves), let me share my thoughts on this incredible new way to see the world from someone else’s eyes.

Periscope is nearly 8 months old with over 10 million users, and I am happy to be one of them. As an observer/broadcaster, I have commented, hearted, shared, followed, and replayed peri-newbies and the guru’s scopes. In all of my watching, learning and broadcasting (thanks for the hearts and follows guys), I have finally decided to share my thoughts about this amazing space that’s changed the game in LIVE streaming.

Feel free to comment, share and let me know your thoughts (oh…and I appreciate your follows @careerengineer).

  • Give Scoper Credit Where Credit is Due: Periscope is always changing, updating and growing (that’s one reason why I love this platform). With that being said, there are certain “Scopers” who source the NEWS before others…and they often share it (but that doesn’t mean you should steal it). So as a common courtesy: if you are sharing a news flash, update or “what’s hot” about this platform…give the original knowledge provider/sharer a shout out.  Don’t pretend like you learned this new thing on your own (when you watched it on someone else’s scope!) C’mon, I mean it’s just the right thing to do.
  • Like the HEARTS but LOVE the Followers:  Goodbye most loved list… and hello trending.  Welcome to the new deal which proves, yet again, the Periscope team was a step ahead of us.  Now we are made aware of scopers with (guess this) exceptional content, amazing retention rates and REAL value versus that gosh darn popularity “heart” contest.  Hearts are great and the original purpose was to let broadcasters know that their content was “on point and valued”. But somehow this concept got twisted into a heart contest, which defeated the purpose.   Sorry heart buyers…you got a bad deal.
  • Fakes It, Won’t Make it…Here: There are several concepts and values that are the foundations of the TCE Network such as: authenticity, being genuine and building REALationships (SM). Trust and community building are hard things to do offline, so you can imagine the drama in attaining those principles online. But now here comes Periscope…who’s original vision (no matter how often people try to pimp it) is REAL community building, being human merged with incredible technology. This is the purest form of diversity of thought from all faces, spaces and races. Now to that guy or gal who thought or have been “coached” to pretend or have an “elevated self-opinion”, it won’t work here. So try this novel approach: if you want your voice or message to be heard, just be “you.”
  • All Viewers…Matter! (Yes that includes the web viewers):  When I first started scoping I was told to ignore the web viewers and focus ALL MY ATTENTION on the LIVE viewers. In short, web viewers don’t matter because they can’t “heart you”. Gosh darn (that’s right no cussing) I was new so I followed to the letter the advice of the Periscope Gurus…but my gut and training told me different (note to self: listen to your gut). Now we understand that in most cases we are getting more views on the Web than in your LIVE broadcasts.  In fact my Peri-Mentor Alex Khan (Follow Him Now) proved that fact to his faithful viewers via FullScope.tv (analytics tool).
  • Periscope Tips, Tricks & Who Do I Watch: Hey as shared earlier, Periscope keeps up with new technology and trends. Here are the most recent updates at the time of this blog:
  1. Apply TV deal (that’s a BIG DEAL)
  2. replay fast forward/rewind
  3. Zoom (Not just for Apples anymore)
  4. Map 2.0 (A whole another level)
  5. Location myth busted (I will scope about that later).

I am honored to be a Beta Tester for Periscope so I have an early idea of what’s next (and it’s exciting). So, whom do I watch, grow and learn from on Periscope? Well, there are many great broadcasters but for me here are my Top 4:

If you follow me, you will ALWAYS see shares for these guys!

  1.  Ryan Bell (Creator of the official Periscope Summit) what a cool dude, another amazing guy who is all about community building and more.

  1.   Alex Khan (amazing human being, who is the perfect example of the right guy for this space, I could do a monthly blog post on Alex Khan #khanscope).

  1.  Vinnie Potestivo (We synced the moment we chatted, this fellow has a heart of gold and a spirit that matches… a true mover and shaker).

  1.  Mario Armstrong (Warning eat your Wheaties before you watch his scopes…because this guy brings it LIVE FOR REAL. EXTREME Technology content).

  • Money Does Not Maketh Man: Yeah, I got that from the Kingsmen Movie (get the Blu-ray). So…just because someone is a BIG NAME with BIG BUCKS in certain spaces does not mean they have character, content or value. In fact, at times it can be “just the opposite”.   Remember, they are scoping (just like you are) to explore, grow and monetize their efforts in a new market (let’s not get that twisted). I can’t tell you how many invites that I got excited about to actually join a scope with a powerful CEO, millionaire, Sales Guru, or inspirational/motivational speaker who attacked their viewers with name calling, extreme profanity…or worse. I even heard a very well know guru respond to a viewer about an upcoming event saying ”they are a bunch of freaks”.
  • Share & Tweet with Caution: Yes, broadcasters will ASK for your shares. However, be darn sure that what you are sharing ADDS VALUE and FITS your community. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been invited to watch a broadcast from a mutual…that when I tuned in…I had to tune out FAST. Their content, broadcast style and/or language use disturbed me (watching their other scopes did not help). The real bad thing about this situation is…what happens when I start thinking differently about the person who keeps ASK ME TO WATCH because they enjoy it …(hum just something to think about).

Bill Gates Shares, What High School Can’t Teach You!

collegeToday I am speaking before a crowd of 21st century 14 – 18 year olds about the future, work values and their job search.  As I was thinking about how this “new digital school” group of exceptional young people may receive my “not so ole school” delivery about the value of work…I thought about Bill Gates.

An ole school fellow that young folks may admire because of this mighty dollars and senses (and Microsoft).  So I recalled  having this “piece of advice from brother Bill” in my  TCE archives.  dusted this thing off and will share it today.  ( I will let you know how it turns out, if they enjoy it our fall asleep).  But in the meantime, what do you think about Bill’s advise to our next generation, is the below STILL relevant today?

Bill Gates’ speech at a high school about 11 things students DID NOT and WILL NOT learn in school

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try de-cluttering the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.
