TCE in Review, 2013 Best & Worse Job/Biz Hunt Practices

DreamJobsNextExit“Will your 2014 Career or Biz Search fair…BETTER or WORSE than your 2013?”  This year brought some significant challenges to the American workforce and marketplace.  Do you remember the sequestration, the historic Government Shutdown in October or the possible repeat of the same this January?  Ready to change your came for Monday mornings in 2014?  Never fear,   The Career Engineer  is here…to share  our take on some of the Best Practices and the Worse Practices we’ve noticed  in the 2013.  So try the TCE Best Practices tips and leave the “other stuff” to your competition.

 Best Practice:

  • Career Entrepreneur:   (Think, Act & Produce…Like You are a Business). In order to KEEP your job you need to EARN your keep.  I know it sounds harsh, but some decisions in the workforce /marketplace does come down to dollars and sense (yes, businesses sense).  I mean if you were the CEO of a business and you had to make that “tough decision” would you keep a non-performer (value unknown) on the payroll?  Or would you keep the team that can bring the most value to your customers.  Be honest, what would you do?
  • A Self Aware Career/Business Professional: Powerful Commodity (Strengths & Your Limitations): Ah…the professionals who know, understand and implement “value/performance” are  powerful entities in the marketplace. Today’s businesses need this type of employee  or leader to keep their engines running…become that candidate. Here’s a sample of the critical skills these folks bring to the table…
    • recognizing strengths and limitations
    • smart decision-making and having a solid powerful vision
    • recognizing when to push and when to throttle back
    • Exceptional online and offline communication skills

Worse Practices: 

  • Career/Biz InsanityDoing the SAME Thing, Yet Expecting DIFFERENT Results.  This is an easy one!  This formula doesn’t work in any part of life…so why use it in your career? (Enough said)
  • Give Me SyndromeSense of Entitlement vs. EMPOWERMENT in your Career hunt.  The days of “I am entitled to a job and the employer  must give me one”…are over.  The 21st century marketplace is hyper-competitive and it’s up to the individual to sell their value, performance and sustainability to the marketplace.  So unless you want a repeat of 2013 in 2014, get with the program or remain in the unemployment line  for a very long time (yes it’s tight, but it’s right!)
  • NO SEED/ NO HARVESTYou Get Out of it, What You Put Into it.  There’s nothing like good, ole fashion wisdom. If you want more out of your workplace experience, then put some skin in the game.  Not sure what I mean my skin? Where have YOU invested either time, talent or treasure (or all three) in your brand? How have you invested in your space, to seal your value to the employer or business owner?  Here are some examples…
    • How much time/dollars are you investing in your professional development?
    • Pride in workmanship, do you care about what you produce?
    • Have you checked and re-checked your work product?
    • How efficient and effective are you…what are you doing to improve that skill?
    • Initiative and follow-up…is that a part of your daily routine?

TCE’s Top 10 Keys To Staying Unemployed (Out of a Job and Broke!)

A bona-fide TCE Career Pull-up Post:  I’ve just created a new TCE math formula for winning a great career opportunity!  Here it is — getting hired is 80% (Engagement/Human Factor) and 20% (Skill/Knowledge/Ability). 

 

As someone who has help professionals to Get Hired and StImageay Hired for over 14 years, I am truly in a STATE OF SHOCK, at how many candidates drop the ball with LACK of interpersonal skills and human engagement.  I am not talking about the 16 – 24 year old…this is “as my ancestors would say “Grown Folks Acting…a Fool” type of thing.

I know it’s EASIER to blame The White House, President Obama, Employers and Congress on the mythical lack of jobs, reduction in opportunity and the economy.  Yes, they have a part to play in this by sticking with the party versus the people (no doubt).  Hey, don’t believe the hype; there are opportunities posted each and every day! (Check out TCEJobStop for proof of that).  However today, I want to turn the conversation around a bit to the increasing LACK of career protocol or, “know-how” to COMPETE, WIN & EARN...a sustainable job or career.

In this time of sequestration and opportunity (yes I said the word opportunity) I am in a You Can’t Write This Stuff state of mind based on what I have seen (with my glasses on) from members of the workforce.  I would have loved to witness career ready concepts converted into REAL displays such as:  powerful presentation, self-driven initiative, follow-through, demonstrated performance and corporate/individual responsibility; but I didn’t.  With over 400 views in 1.75 days for (1) particular job, I can count on my fingers, a couple of empowerment-based candidates who did make it to the interview stage (smh).  This is truly a sad commentary, as I am sure the qualifications where there, but the lack of the human WOW factor prevented those skills and abilities from getting…noticed!

Now the moment of truth and hope, if you find yourself doing ANY of the below, please stop immediately.  If you are NOT displaying these behaviors, you are ahead of your competition by 80%!  Here is my list and good luck on your career search.

TCE’s 10 Ways to NOT Get HIRED:

  • Failure to show up for…(get this) a virtual meeting such as phone or Skype!
  • Lack of email management to check SPAM folder for interview confirmation
  • ERRORS ON RESUME — job titles, dates of work, emails or heck (no phone or email at all!!)
  • Post confirmation and phone screen, failure to SHOW-UP at physical interview (unbelievable)
  • Terrible diction, poor affect, lack of engagement, questioning the interviewer on why they have to show up for a second interview (oh these were degreed and a couple of veterans).
  • 15 minutes before interview, there’s a call “Sorry I can’t make it!” (Mind you, 48-hour window to reschedule…but heck let’s reduce that to 15 minutes).
  • Asking for $40K more than posted salary range, “because I’m worth it and I have all of this” Maybe so…but we are not ASKING for …All of that!!! (Yes this really happened)
  • Sending resume with different desired position title, someone else name (not mine)…yes that’s why MASS email blast are a poor idea!
  • Having your parent apply for YOU!!  (OMG…for an adult child…Yes this happened)
  • Winner: Not Following Directions, ESPECIALLY the SIMPLE ONES, like email resume here & don’t cut and paste.
