Not Getting Hired? Here’s Why (TCE Tough Love)

Looking for work can be stressful. When we don’t get hired we often say things like: why aren’t they calling me back, I know I crushed the interview but why didn’t they hire me! Then of course there is the, I’m overqualified, that’s why I am not getting hired! We’ve all been there, submitting those resume, going to the interviews and nothing happens. What’s the real deal here, is it the employer or is it you? Truth be told, maybe it’s a bit of both! So, never fear, the Career Engineer is here to share some REAL TCE Tough love to share what employers want and how you can meet the need.

Why Am I NOT Getting Hired?

  • YOU DON’T HAVE the skills they need: It’s NOT about what you can do; it’s about what they need. If the job requires 5 years of “thus and so” and you have 2 years and still apply…yikes! If the job prefers a Bachelor’s degree and you apply with a PhD…well? TCE Example: Employer needs a hammer but you keep sending the duck tape, lawn mower, power drill and forklift resume…get it!

  • YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT: Still applying for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! This demonstrates lack of focus, planning, strategy, research, and preparation skills. Would you hire someone who throws a ball in the air and HOPE it hits the target?

  • YOUR INTERVIEWS NEED WORK: Just the facts…oh and some great stories. An interview is a meeting of the mind, body, soul, spirit and yes skills. This is where you are being accessed (all of you). By the way, you have maybe 30 minutes to SELL your gifts, talents, energy, personality, passion, knowledge, ability, job interest and skills. (So Practice!)

  • YOUR resumes are confusing: Plus you have too many of them! Your resume should showcase what you WANT and what you have DONE with what you’ve GOT! It should speak to your Performance, Accomplishments and Leadership (P.A.L.), passion and personality. It’s your first work sample…not something you just throw together.

  • YOU’RE NOT A GOOD FIT: Failure happens when you try to be something that you are not! Forcing a square peg (with skills) into a round hole (need skills)…will not work. Employer hire for skill, talent and ability…but they also hire for likability and “goodness of fit” as well. Do your research and find the right company, culture and management style that works for you. For example these are all great employers with a big difference in workplace culture (Google, Amazon, USgov, Pfizer, Costco).

Yes I Have Breast Cancer…But I STILL Need to Work!

TCE Summit Helps Employees and Breast Cancer Survivors to Stay Employed!

According to the BreastCancer.org, “…in 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. As of March 2017, there are more than 3.1 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.” I know, I am one of them. In 2016, I was diagnosed with a surprise Stage 3, Triple Negative Breast Cancer followed by aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. “It’s a tough time for many women who are anxious about their appearance, dignity, self-esteem and paying their bills.” says Francina R. Harrison, MSW, known nationally as “The Career Engineer®” (TCE).

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared! In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for every paid registration, The Career Engineer will provide one (1) complimentary TCE Career & Business Breakfast and Summit ticket for a breast cancer patient or survivor who is still working but anxious about their career or business future. I’ve talked to women in the workforce who are fearful about breast cancer treatment and how it will impact their careers or future. During my journey, powered by fierce faith and TCE “mental Push-Ups”, I stayed in business, spoke at conferences and appeared on TV (often the day after chemo)! That’s why this year’s theme, “The POWER of NOW & NEXT”, is so important. I have learned that when bad news hits us, it’s what we do NEXT ..that matters,” says The Career Engineer, the TCE Summit Breakfast keynote speaker.

From One Cancer Patient to Another …#SenatorMcCain

As a Stage 3, triple negative, breast cancer overcomer healed in Jesus name…I am shocked that #johnmccain did this. He can fight this disease without worrying how he can afford to pay for his life saving treatment. I’m a retired military family member have a Feb 2017 surgery denial (after I had the surgery) from my insurance company that I have to FIGHT for to get them to pay the bill.

Shame on you #senatormccain, as you go back home and get the BEST healthcare that money can buy on the backs of American taxpayers who struggle to receive affordable healthcare. All those patients on chemo and radiation right now…using the ACA and/or protected by the ACA …you voted to end their treatment and their fight. From one Cancer patient to another … again I say shame on you and may God have mercy on your soul.

Yes…I am…struggling with this….BIG TIME!!!!

How Faith, Castor Oil, Chemo & Showing Up, Healed ME!

So I shared some “Healing Tips” on my TCE Instagram account on things  I did during my Stage  3  Cancer treatments that helped me get thru it in an uncommon way.   What’s also interesting, is that I continued using this regimen  and it has helped me to feel even better post-chemo and radiation treatment. So when I share this on Instagram , it seemed to produce interest,  curiosity and more!  In fact , it was suggested by a follower…that these  tips should be published. So I figured, why not blog about it.

But first let me do the legal thing.   I am not a doctor  or a medical professional so please be aware that the results that happened to me may be different, don’t work for you or it could be better. My lawyer is happy that I cleared that up.  But what I WILL SAY, and what  I am… is a stage 3,triple negative, spread to my nodes,  breast cancer conqueror  (I’m not a survivor) was healed  in 366 days and who seem to have tolerated chemo without the extreme sickness. extreme fatigue or physical complications.

So….here are those tips and I hope they bless someone.

MY HEALING REGIMEN:  Of Course I activated my faith, prayed, did 5 months of aggressive chemo, 4 Neulasta shots, weekly lab work, 5 surgeries  and  6 weeks of daily radiation! Oh did you see my LAST DAY OF TREATMENT video on youtube, I’m not glamorous, it’s pretty encouraging, but get some tissue!!!

DURING TREATMENT:  I also drank half my bodyweight in water 3 days before and after chemo,  used castor oil (mixed with rosemary and lavender) on my body, nails, skin, brows, hair and eyelashes..even as the hair said “good bye”.   Let me be 100% truthful, I shaved my head at 6 weeks when it started to come out.

Let me not forget to mention my Black Soap by Rafiki skin Care (amazing on my troubled skin).  Also took my daily apple cider vinegar cocktail in the morning, stayed engaged in my career, life and business and took naps lol. Folks getting up, everyday, getting dressed, staying engaged in LIFE is the key.  Oh, I also laughed a lot, told jokes and did the wobble as much as possible (yes the line dance).

All I can say, skin glowed, nails grew, no nausea, no bone pain, no mouth sores, nails did not fall off (in fact they grew), no weight loss, energy (not like before cancer) but it was workable. Proof of energy are my local – national speaking event, interviewing amazing people like Coach Mike Tomlin and coordinated the 2016 TCE Summit (which was a success, yep 2017 is planned on Oct 21, 2017).  All of my speaking events happened the day AFTER chemo ; yeah that’s how GOD works.  Oh yeah , that chemo fog thing (hum..I don’t think so lol)

AFTER TREATMENT: I STILL DAILY EAGLE UP, FAITH UP, THANK GOD  HOURLY,  take my  daily vitamin, castor oil regimen (skin, nails, eyes, hair, brows, lashes), water,  apple cider vinegar cocktail, added Coq10, b12, B6 and iron pills to help red blood cells and reduce chemo induced anemia, neuropathy.  Dancing 30 minutes (when no one is watching), getting some REAL Sun, and doing house work more (hey its exercise.)

So, that’s what I did and now I LIVE every day…like I’m dying!  (Meaning  well, because according to science, our cells die…daily; so don’t waste your days folks, make sure they count for something).  In fact, I redesigned a group of mine on Facebook called “Don’t Get Anxious”  to help others to keep it moving and flowing, in-spite of LIFE’s obstacles.  You are welcomed to join the group, share your wisdom and share the group with others.

Ready to Spring Into Your New Job?

Ah spring is in the air, can you feel it? This is a great time to find amazing opportunities in today’s workplace. Job fairs and career open houses sprout up this time of year looking for great people to fill their talent needs. Are YOU that new Spring Hire? Never fear the Career Engineer is here sharing some spring tips & tricks for you to bloom!

  • DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO: Anywhere and everywhere is NOT a job search goal…it’s chaos. Instead try a “hi-tech/high-touch” targeted, intentional and focused approach to the marketplace. TCE PushUp: If you don’t know your destination, every path you take is the wrong one.
  • DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO GO: Think industry instead of job title…this technique produces more options.   For example, if you are an office administrative professional who enjoys children…source opportunities in: education, early education, pediatric medicine and youth centric organizations (girl scouts, boy scouts, YMCA etc). Check out the TCEjobStop , enter your zip code and see who is hiring right now
  • DECIDE TO SELL YOUR VALUE: Great employers want GREAT talent; give them what they are looking for! Sale who you ARE, not what you’re NOT! Performance, Accomplishments and Leadership (PALS) is the name of this game. Employers are looking for people they like, have the talent, fit the culture and can get the job done…is that YOU?

Virginia Beach, VA — September 28th 2016 — According to The New York Times, “for-profit colleges were a magnet for billions of dollars in federal student loans and grants to low-income students. Hundreds of millions more flowed in from the Pentagon and veterans’ programs through the G.I. Bill.” In terms of the Wells Fargo fires, CNN Money reports “that they are now, hearing from former Wells Fargo (WFC) workers around the country who tried to put a stop to these illegal tactics. Almost half a dozen workers who spoke with us say they paid dearly for trying to do the right thing: they were fired.”
