Well Facebook buddies, you asked for it, you’ve got it! I shared my top 12 Wisdom points to my son Nehemiah on his 21st Birthday (which is today June 18, 2015).  I have received more comments and thank you’s on those 12 points and suggestion that I should “share with others.”  So I figured, “why not”…plus it helps me to get use to blogging more..  There are millions of “parental units”  (that’s what my son calls…us) out there who are  “proud, excited  and concerned” about their budding 21-year-old.

This is a brave new world..and very different from my 21st year experience.  In this quick, fast and in a hurry world, with limited human interaction, irrational actions and folks who “act FIRST and THINK later”;  how can I keep my son (or daughter)..safe.  So, with that being said, here are some of the “uh oh’s” that came through my brain.
  • Are they ready..I mean REALLY Read?
  • Will the world treat them fairly, he’s raised in the suburbs?
  • Will he  make it… with or without Google?
  • Will WE make it?

So below is what I shared with my son (on a Facebook post this morning ) to celebrate an amazing 21 year journey.  I hope it blesses or helps my fellow “parental units” out there.

TCE Blogs: Uber Driver Is Employee, Not Contractor Says, California…#Really?

Wow, so that changes the game on Uber...Big Time!  America…you may have to find your Taxi’s number because this ruling in California may just change the way Uber operates…across the nation.  How and why you may ask?  Well it means that Uber may have to do what most businesses HAVE to do…when they hire folks: follow employment law!   If you are not sure exactly what this “hoopla” is all about, read the article RIGHT HERE.

For those reading  this blog who may say “so what, who cares and …what’s the BIG Deal?”  Well Uber has been “cruising”  with its fleet of “low-cost high returns” drivers by keeping them as 1099 (independent contractors).  In short, by filling the driver need with 1099’s versus W2’s  workers,  UBER IS NOT REQUIRED to handle payroll taxes (state/federal/etc). That daunting task is the responsibility of the …”independent contractor” aka Jane and John personal car driver.  Companies who use this model (which is perfectly legal) for “filling or outsourcing their needs”  don’t have to deal with employment law factors related to hiring/firing, EEOC, ADA, Worker’s Comp, insurances or other human resources compliances (which means – they save BIG BUCKS).

The Career EngineerSo…since business progressive (and very liberal) California said “hold on, wait a minute…STOP” could other states or commonwealths (like my conservative Virginia) rethink their Uber business rulings?  So from my TCE viewpoint,  there are two ways that this can go..for Uber and the folks they “pick up”. One, Uber has to be an employer in California, the cost for service will go up substantially for this “new method” of transportation and demand will potentially go down.  Or, two Uber will say “we are out of here” and shut the party down all together with its “personal vehicle” service.  So it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

In the mean time, I may have to get my whistle skills back and learn how to “hail a taxi”…again 🙂

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  So. you had the interview!  The interviewer seemed to be captured by you!   You are feel pretty good about yourself and sense that you “hit it out of the park!”  That’s great, but now what do you do?  There are some power boosters and pitfalls to be aware of that can INFLUENCE the “You are Hired…decision!”  But it’s very important that you use these strategies with care and the right way…so you don’t screw things up.

So here are a few TCE tips to make the interview waiting period…less anxious.

Thank you card! A REAL, handwritten, USPS mailed OR dropped off within 48 hours. Addressed to the decision maker(s) and make sure you mention an organic/authentic  talking point from the interview. This is one of the most “hi-touch” power moves in the industry…and so many fail to use it in the “point and click world of today”.  (Note to Readers:  NO THANK YOU? BIG MISTAKE).

  • TCE Tip: TCE is “anti” email thank you notes.

Strategic Follow-up: In some cases, a personal follow-up call can be a GREAT “get noticed” booster. Warning, this assertive strategy MUST be tactfully qualified by asking during your interview, if a “follow-up” call is appropriate. No one wants a stalker or a pest….so make sure you KNOW the difference before you call or reach out to someone.  But if done correctly…this smart move can demonstrate what you can deliver to the employer.  (Note to Readers:  Who doesn’t like someone who follows through?)

  • TCE Tip: A little scared, then leave a voicemail early AM or late PM

Don’t STOP on the Feeling: Stay in the race. Keep on meeting, networking AND interviewing with potential employers UNTIL you show UP on your first day of work.  One of the WORSE things a career professional can do is to STOP their strategic job search…based on a false, unproven…feeling.  Keep it moving and flowing…always.

  • TCE Tip: traditional and non-traditional networking events are EVERYWHERE…make sure you keep your buzz  branded in the right spaces.
