How to Bounce Back from a Lay-off (TCE Style)

Oh no! That dreaded meeting in the office at the end of the day (Thursdays and Friday’s are the preferred days.) Have you ever heard this, “…In spite of all your efforts and a job “well done”, an “executive decision” was made to cut cost and reduce expenditure. It’s not a reflection on you and your hard work, it’s the economy, funding, etc.”   In other words, you have just been laid-off!   Then those immediate feelings of disbelief “no this is NOT happening to me”, panic or anxiety kick in. So what do YOU do? I mean, what CAN YOU Do? Never fear, the Career Engineer is here with some “Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared” tips and booster to help you bounce back from the Lay-off. 

  • Access Where You Are: Get a realistic handle on your career power & cash resources (60, 90, 180 day plans are a good idea). Start developing a job search plan, tap into you vetted contacts and get busy. Connect with your local unemployment agency to see where you stand in terms of unemployment benefits and additional resources/help.
  • If it’s Broke, Fix It: Revisit your Brand (resume, Social platform, connections) Update with Power Now! Yes you can do it yourself with books and YouTube training or you can hire a professional career strategist who knows how to help you SELL your brand and close the deal.
  • Job Development: Niche Boards and job fairs are the best: Check out National Job Fairs for a list of fairs in your area and the Best 50 Job Boards .   Also view your Economic development agencies, Chamber Listings or visit the Library to get information on companies and points of contacts in your area.
  • Network for REAL: Find vetted, boutique, solid gatherings where REALatioships, Access and Opportunity shine. Be careful not to execute an everywhere and anywhere strategy but attend events or gatherings where the people you want to get in front of…attend. Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  So. you had the interview!  The interviewer seemed to be captured by you!   You are feel pretty good about yourself and sense that you “hit it out of the park!”  That’s great, but now what do you do?  There are some power boosters and pitfalls to be aware of that can INFLUENCE the “You are Hired…decision!”  But it’s very important that you use these strategies with care and the right way…so you don’t screw things up.

So here are a few TCE tips to make the interview waiting period…less anxious.

Thank you card! A REAL, handwritten, USPS mailed OR dropped off within 48 hours. Addressed to the decision maker(s) and make sure you mention an organic/authentic  talking point from the interview. This is one of the most “hi-touch” power moves in the industry…and so many fail to use it in the “point and click world of today”.  (Note to Readers:  NO THANK YOU? BIG MISTAKE).

  • TCE Tip: TCE is “anti” email thank you notes.

Strategic Follow-up: In some cases, a personal follow-up call can be a GREAT “get noticed” booster. Warning, this assertive strategy MUST be tactfully qualified by asking during your interview, if a “follow-up” call is appropriate. No one wants a stalker or a pest….so make sure you KNOW the difference before you call or reach out to someone.  But if done correctly…this smart move can demonstrate what you can deliver to the employer.  (Note to Readers:  Who doesn’t like someone who follows through?)

  • TCE Tip: A little scared, then leave a voicemail early AM or late PM

Don’t STOP on the Feeling: Stay in the race. Keep on meeting, networking AND interviewing with potential employers UNTIL you show UP on your first day of work.  One of the WORSE things a career professional can do is to STOP their strategic job search…based on a false, unproven…feeling.  Keep it moving and flowing…always.

  • TCE Tip: traditional and non-traditional networking events are EVERYWHERE…make sure you keep your buzz  branded in the right spaces.

So…is your career or business execution plan to be the Jack of All Trades?  Be careful, you may end up becoming  the Master of None!   Welcome to the online/offline marketplace and the days of hyper-competition, fake relationships, hustlers/scammers, content stealers, back stabbers and more.  Sometimes being “Jack” versus “Master” is nothing more than a 21st century distraction that has many of us confused that ACTIVITY and ACCOMPLISHMENTS…are the same thing. They are not, in fact the “busy without a REAL plan or REAL purpose mindset” is something the Jack’s keep doing but produces ZERO product, passion or positioning.

How to WORK a Career/Job Fair…TCE Style

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  It’s the HIRING season and many organizations are hosting career or job fairs locally and nationally! Did you know thatMarch, April & May are BIG months for serious recruitment events…and any time there are 20+ employers in ONE room….that’s always a GOOD Day.   But the REAL question is, “How many of US REALLY know how to WORK a Job Fair?”  I mean, what do you do there?  Should we just move from “table to table” with that same ole “I want a job” handshake, say a few words and drop off some papers?  Or…are there some TCE REALsolutions that can help us to get noticed and hired?  I have shared, some of my techniques below.   To help your career/job search, we have created some awesome TCE connection events (online & offline)  coming up this week …and ALL year!   So…make sure you click  TCE Career & Biz Events and join us! TCE Job Fair Tips & Boosters: 

  1. Research the companies prior to the job fair.  Most sponsors will advertise in advance to let the public know which companies are coming.  Use your Internet sourcing skills to research company history/culture, current job postings, upward mobility and compensation programs.
  1. Develop your market – have a Plan A, B, and C.  Every company that attends a job fair may not meet your initial skill sets.  So find those 10-15 companies that may be an exact match to what you are looking for (make those your Plan A companies).  The remaining companies should be classified as your Plan B, C and so on.  I recommend you go to every table to learn first hand about specific employment opportunities.  Never assume you know…go find out.
  1. Make a personalized cover letter, combined with your resume, for your Plan A companies and go to those companies first.  This is something that I have done in the past and it helped me to stand out from the competition. (Old School Booster)
  1. Meet the managers/recruiters and SELL your skills and what you bring to the table…(3 minutes or less.)
  1. Be prepared to deploy your resume/brand at a moments notice.  A recruiter should not have to “pull teeth” to get your resume or hear more about your brand.
  1. There is a time for shyness…this is not it (blow your horn).
  1. Interview the companies.  Now is the time to ask questions that may make you feel uncomfortable in the interview chair like (schedules, and how does the representative like working there…hiring salary ranges).
  1. Take all company literature and business cards for follow-up and future employment search activities.

You’re FIRED, The Power of the “We The People” Vote

The Career EngineerFirst let me say a big “PushUp & Thank you for voting” on yesterday as WE THE PEOPLE across this great county shared our voice with our vote.  Boy did our vote matter as there are many elected officials who are licking their wounds and have just LOST their jobs. But was this due to a record voter turnout or a lack luster voter engagement which has now changed things in our districts?  As I watched the election coverage, reports were coming in that in some precincts you could hear a pen drop because of the No Shows (people who failed to come out and vote).    The most troubling thing about this is that the mid-term, state and local elections are the most important because they have the most policy power  in our lives.  I wonder, will my Nov 4th NO SHOWS stand in line on Black Friday to cast their votes on shopping deals?   Just something to make you go….hum!

As you can see NO SHOWs  not only matter in the Career or Biz Space…but they are also important in our Life Space. If you DIDN’T VOTE, please keep your complaints/comments to yourself over the next few years.   To my WE THE PEOPLE  voters let’s make a plan to evaluate our HIRES during their terms so we can decide when their contract is up to either REHIRE or FIRE via the vote.   To our  elected officials, if you want to STAY HIRED,  as a member of “WE THE PEOPLE”  I ask that you do the following…

  • I ask that my newly or rehired elected officials know and represent your citizens.  I know it sounds simple but it’s not getting done!
  • I demand that my newly or rehired elected officials put the Party agenda on the shelf, take ownership, find REAL solutions & stop attacking the other Party.
  • I expect that my newly or rehired elected officials will Focus 100% on finding ways where the “United States of America” (Key word UNITED).. can be a stable, sustainable, strong and secure nation
  • Bonus Point:  Your Supervisors (WE THE PEOPLE) will be  WATCHING YOU NOW AND FOREVER MORE!

So,there it is…and I expect the above three (3) items to be deliverables from the very poor of us to the most prosperous of us.  To our MID-TERM HIRES, don’t take your job for granted or those impressive fringe benefits (like the best healthcare coverage in the USA), salaries for working and NOT WORKING, free lunches/dinners and perks… (all paid for by your supervisors “WE THE PEOPLE”.)  Lastly,  The Career Engineer  is a proud member of “WE THE PEOPLE”, I expect my elected officials to work smart, work hard and to get the job done. and most important…don’t screw up…because  “WE THE PEOPLE “ are counting on you!

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  I know, it’s that season of creepy things that go bump in the night…but don’t let that affect your career search!  I know that many of us are still working on our career transition plan and things get a bit “scary” when the bills are due…and the resources are low.   I know that at times it feels like there are no easy roads, easy choices or answers.

Now as your Career Engineer, I must tell you faith, hope and optimism are a must during these situational scary times.  Keeping your head up , your actions focused and on point combined with uncommon faith…will help us to make our Mondays better.  If you are not sure about that, re-read my Blog Post, “What if GOD Was  My Coffee”   it will keep you inspired.   Wow, now back to what started this post, on Monday, I had a chance to stop by my regional NBC affiliate WAVY10 this to share “Scary Job Search tricks to avoid.”   So I figured, let me share this with you 🙂 feel free to comment and share with others.  Be safe, be blessed!

Turn that BOO Around with These Simple Steps:

  • Stop The Doom & Gloom:   Stop complaining about the economy and (this my sound tough) …put your feelings “in your pocket.”  Blame and denial never helps you reach your goals.  Here is a secret that hiring managers know…great companies ALWAYS look for the right talent…in any economy. Make sure you fit the bill and have a record of performance that is in demand.
  • Don’t Get Tricked BE the Treat: “You can’t SELL What You Don’t Know!”   It has always surprised me how we rush to flood the market, without truly knowing who we are, our value, what we want and what we are selling.  Boo!!  Stop doing that instead INVEST in your brand (Your Package & Your Response)  and please get this, VALUE not vulnerability…wins!
  • Don’t EAT All that “Career” Candy, it Can Cause a Toothache:   Candy apples are very popular, they may work for you…but to me that are just too sweet!  And…if you eat to much of a good or bad thing…you can STILL get SICK.  So what am I trying to say…what’s GOOD for someone else may NOT BE GOOD for you!   In your career space, if you are stuck and not sure what to do, reach out to the “right kind” of help…for you.
