New Year, New Career!

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared! Workers may be thinking “new year, new job,” according to a survey from staffing firm Accountemps. Approximately three in 10 (29%) professionals plan to look for a new position in the next 12 months. And of the 27 markets surveyed, Los Angeles (40%); Austin, Texas (38%); and Dallas (37%) topped the list of U.S. cities with the most workers planning to find new opportunities.   So what about you? Are you ready to “make that career move in 2018?” Never fear, The Career Engineer is here to share some BEST tips for that NEW career move.

Here we go…

  • Timeless Tip: Know & your P.A.L.s (Performance, Accomplishment & Leadership), update your online look and offline skills.

  • Resume jury is split: 10 years ago one page was the rule, now 46% senior managers prefer one-page & 47% believe two pages is ideal

  • Follow up…tactfully:   Hiring managers expect the follow-up, but 33% have removed candidates from consideration due to being “too pushy.”

UPWARD MOBILITY “Ask The Career Engineer”

Q:   I have been in my current job for a number of years. I have reached the capped level in terms of my position. I have asked my manager for increased responsibilities for a higher position or increased compensation. However, I continue to get the “nothing is available” response. What should I do? Kathy, G.

A:   It sounds like you are at a real crossroads point in your career Kathy. You may have to consider a couple of options: 1. Find another opportunity where you can increase your skill sets, professional development and increase your income. 2. Stay in a position where you are the “expert” and sit it out until retirement. These are decisions that only you can make. It’s not uncommon in this day and age that in order for seasoned employees to obtain additional opportunities they may have to “step up” to the next level. Unfortunately, this may mean changing employers in order to have upward mobility.

Before deciding something of that magnitude, have a “heart to heart” with your manager explaining your desire for upward mobility and the “real” growth outlook for the company. If the company has taken a position of “null growth”, you have to come to terms with that understanding. Is that an organization where you really want to exhaust your talents? Upward mobility is definitely a good questioning point during the interview process, ask the questions regarding where the company sees itself in 5 years or 10 years. This way you can make a good decision based on the expectations if this is a good fit for you.

So…You Want to Work from Home! (Myths & Truths)

The Career Engineer

Ah yes, everyone wants to work from home. But are you REALLY ready to handle the freedom and independence of remote working? Or are you suspicious about “work from home” opportunities? Are they real, can you make a good LIVING; or is it another job hunters beware scam? Working from home can be a blessing for professionals who desire extreme flexibility to meet work and life demands. But it’s not a party…and production and performance STILL matter. Never fear, the Career Engineer is here to share some definite “tips & tricks” for the job hunter who would like to tap into the remote or telecommuting industry.

Remote Work Opportunities (Myths & Truths)

  • You Have To PAY to Work from Home: Bona fide W2 opportunities are not a Pay to Play world. If someone says you can work from home but it cost you $$$ up front to work for them…run! (Myth/Hustle)

  • Traditional Companies are Embracing It: Teleworking, hoteling & remote work is now more than ever being embraced by government and traditional sectors for certain professions. Use of mobile technology, virtual meetings and “the cloud” is making this a better fit for the bottom line. (Truth)

  • ONLY Stuffing Envelopes or Setting Appointments (Myth): Telecommute/Remote Jobs in Virginia Beach: management, sales, customer services, marketing, accounting/finance, healthcare, education and business operations. According to the BreastCancer.org, “…in 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. As of March 2017, there are more than 3.1 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.” I know, I am one of them. In 2016, I was diagnosed with a surprise Stage 3, Triple Negative Breast Cancer followed by aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. “It’s a tough time for many women who are anxious about their appearance, dignity, self-esteem and paying their bills.” says Francina R. Harrison, MSW, known nationally as “The Career Engineer®” (TCE).

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for every paid registration, The Career Engineer will provide one (1) complimentary TCE Career & Business Breakfast and Summit ticket for a breast cancer patient or survivor who is still working but anxious about their career or business future. I’ve talked to women in the workforce who are fearful about breast cancer treatment and how it will impact their careers or future. During my journey, powered by fierce faith and TCE “mental Push-Ups”, I stayed in business, spoke at conferences and appeared on TV (often the day after chemo)! That’s why this year’s theme, “The POWER of NOW & NEXT”, is so important. Got the Interview….Now What?

Got the Interview….Now What? TCE Top Post Interview Boosters

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  So. you had the interview!  The interviewer seemed to be captured by you!   You are feel pretty good about yourself and sense that you “hit it out of the park!”  That’s great, but now what do you do?  There are some power boosters and pitfalls to be aware of that can INFLUENCE the “You are Hired…decision!”  But it’s very important that you use these strategies with care and the right way…so you don’t screw things up.

So here are a few TCE tips to make the interview waiting period…less anxious.

Thank you card! A REAL, handwritten, USPS mailed OR dropped off within 48 hours. Addressed to the decision maker(s) and make sure you mention an organic/authentic  talking point from the interview. This is one of the most “hi-touch” power moves in the industry…and so many fail to use it in the “point and click world of today”.  (Note to Readers:  NO THANK YOU? BIG MISTAKE).

  • TCE Tip: TCE is “anti” email thank you notes.

Strategic Follow-up: In some cases, a personal follow-up call can be a GREAT “get noticed” booster. Warning, this assertive strategy MUST be tactfully qualified by asking during your interview, if a “follow-up” call is appropriate. No one wants a stalker or a pest….so make sure you KNOW the difference before you call or reach out to someone.  But if done correctly…this smart move can demonstrate what you can deliver to the employer.  (Note to Readers:  Who doesn’t like someone who follows through?)

  • TCE Tip: A little scared, then leave a voicemail early AM or late PM

Don’t STOP on the Feeling: Stay in the race. Keep on meeting, networking AND interviewing with potential employers UNTIL you show UP on your first day of work.  One of the WORSE things a career professional can do is to STOP their strategic job search…based on a false, unproven…feeling.  Keep it moving and flowing…always.

  • TCE Tip: traditional and non-traditional networking events are EVERYWHERE…make sure you keep your buzz  branded in the right spaces.

You CAN Get Hired While it’s…HOT!
