UPWARD MOBILITY “Ask The Career Engineer”

Q:   I have been in my current job for a number of years. I have reached the capped level in terms of my position. I have asked my manager for increased responsibilities for a higher position or increased compensation. However, I continue to get the “nothing is available” response. What should I do? Kathy, G.

A:   It sounds like you are at a real crossroads point in your career Kathy. You may have to consider a couple of options: 1. Find another opportunity where you can increase your skill sets, professional development and increase your income. 2. Stay in a position where you are the “expert” and sit it out until retirement. These are decisions that only you can make. It’s not uncommon in this day and age that in order for seasoned employees to obtain additional opportunities they may have to “step up” to the next level. Unfortunately, this may mean changing employers in order to have upward mobility.

Before deciding something of that magnitude, have a “heart to heart” with your manager explaining your desire for upward mobility and the “real” growth outlook for the company. If the company has taken a position of “null growth”, you have to come to terms with that understanding. Is that an organization where you really want to exhaust your talents? Upward mobility is definitely a good questioning point during the interview process, ask the questions regarding where the company sees itself in 5 years or 10 years. This way you can make a good decision based on the expectations if this is a good fit for you.

So…You Want to Work from Home! (Myths & Truths)

The Career Engineer

Ah yes, everyone wants to work from home. But are you REALLY ready to handle the freedom and independence of remote working? Or are you suspicious about “work from home” opportunities? Are they real, can you make a good LIVING; or is it another job hunters beware scam? Working from home can be a blessing for professionals who desire extreme flexibility to meet work and life demands. But it’s not a party…and production and performance STILL matter. Never fear, the Career Engineer is here to share some definite “tips & tricks” for the job hunter who would like to tap into the remote or telecommuting industry.

Remote Work Opportunities (Myths & Truths)

  • You Have To PAY to Work from Home: Bona fide W2 opportunities are not a Pay to Play world. If someone says you can work from home but it cost you $$$ up front to work for them…run! (Myth/Hustle)

  • Traditional Companies are Embracing It: Teleworking, hoteling & remote work is now more than ever being embraced by government and traditional sectors for certain professions. Use of mobile technology, virtual meetings and “the cloud” is making this a better fit for the bottom line. (Truth)

  • ONLY Stuffing Envelopes or Setting Appointments (Myth): Telecommute/Remote Jobs in Virginia Beach: management, sales, customer services, marketing, accounting/finance, healthcare, education and business operations. (Sourced Today from Google for Work (Listen to Our Interview)CLICK HERE for Remote Jobs in the USA.

How Faith, Castor Oil, Chemo & Showing Up, Healed ME!

So I shared some “Healing Tips” on my TCE Instagram account on things  I did during my Stage  3  Cancer treatments that helped me get thru it in an uncommon way.   What’s also interesting, is that I continued using this regimen and it has helped me to feel even better post-chemo and radiation treatment. So when I share this on Instagram, it seemed to produce interest,  curiosity and more!  In fact, it was suggested by a follower…that these tips should be published. So I figured, why not blog about it.

But first, let me do the legal thing.   I am not a doctor or a medical professional so please be aware that the results that happened to me may be different, don’t work for you or it could be better. My lawyer is happy that I cleared that up.  But what I WILL SAY, and what  I am… is a stage 3, triple negative, spread to my nodes,  breast cancer conqueror  (I’m not a survivor) was healed in 366 days and who seem to have tolerated chemo without the extreme sickness. extreme fatigue or physical complications.

So….here are those tips and I hope they bless someone.

MY HEALING REGIMEN:  Of Course I activated my faith, prayed, did 5 months of aggressive chemo, 4 Neulasta shots, weekly lab work, 5 surgeries and  6 weeks of daily radiation! Oh did you see my LAST DAY OF TREATMENT video on youtube, I’m not glamorous, it’s pretty encouraging, but get some tissue!!!

DURING TREATMENT:  I also drank half my body weight in water 3 days before and after chemo,  used Bragg’s Organic castor oil (mixed with rosemary and lavender) on my body, nails, skin, brows, hair, scares and eyelashes..even as the hair said “goodbye”.   Let me be 100% truthful, I shaved my head at 6 weeks when it started to come out.

Let me not forget to mention my Black Soap by Rafiki skin Care (amazing on my troubled skin).  Also took my daily apple cider vinegar cocktail in the morning, stayed engaged in my career, life and business and took naps lol. Folks getting up, every day, getting dressed, staying engaged in LIFE is the key.  Oh, I also laughed a lot, told jokes and did the wobble as much as possible (yes the line dance).

All I can say, skin glowed, nails grew, no nausea, no bone pain, no mouth sores, nails did not fall off (in fact they grew), no weight loss, energy (not like before cancer) but it was workable. Proof of energy is my local – national speaking event, interviewing amazing people like Coach Mike Tomlin and coordinated both the 2016 TCE Summit (two weeks after chemo).  We also ROCKED the 2017  TCE Summit and blessed over 20 employees who are going through treatment to stay empowered and to on the job.  Yes, another stellar event will be planned for October next year, just stay connected to TCE.    Now, what’s REALLY interesting to me, even today, is that ALL of my speaking events happened the day AFTER chemo; yeah that’s how GOD works.  Oh yeah , that chemo fog thing (hum..I don’t think so lol)

AFTER TREATMENT: I STILL DAILY EAGLE UP, FAITH UP, THANK GOD  HOURLY,  take my  daily vitamin, castor oil regimen (skin, nails, eyes, hair, brows, lashes, feet, hands), water,  apple cider vinegar cocktail, added Coq10, b12, B6 and iron pills to help red blood cells and reduce chemo-induced anemia, neuropathy.  Dancing 30 minutes (when no one is watching), getting some REAL Sun, and doing housework more (hey its exercise.) I’ve also added 2000mg Vitamin D daily to the mix, my energy seems more consistent now 11 months post final treatment.

So, that’s what I did and now I LIVE every day…like I’m dying!  (Meaning  well, because according to science, our cells die…daily; so don’t waste your day’s folks, make sure they count for something).  In fact, I redesigned a group of mine on Facebook called “Don’t Get Anxious”  to help others to keep it moving and flowing, in-spite of LIFE’s obstacles.  You are welcomed to join the group, share your wisdom and share the group with others.

Of course, if you have questions or comments about this blog, please ask below…I am happy to share what worked for me.

Ready to Spring Into Your New Job?

Ah spring is in the air, can you feel it? This is a great time to find amazing opportunities in today’s workplace. Job fairs and career open houses sprout up this time of year looking for great people to fill their talent needs. Are YOU that new Spring Hire? Never fear the Career Engineer is here sharing some spring tips & tricks for you to bloom!

  • DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO: Anywhere and everywhere is NOT a job search goal…it’s chaos. Instead try a “hi-tech/high-touch” targeted, intentional and focused approach to the marketplace. TCE PushUp: If you don’t know your destination, every path you take is the wrong one.
  • DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO GO: Think industry instead of job title…this technique produces more options.   For example, if you are an office administrative professional who enjoys children…source opportunities in: education, early education, pediatric medicine and youth centric organizations (girl scouts, boy scouts, YMCA etc). Check out the TCEjobStop , enter your zip code and see who is hiring right now
  • DECIDE TO SELL YOUR VALUE: Great employers want GREAT talent; give them what they are looking for! Sale who you ARE, not what you’re NOT! Performance, Accomplishments and Leadership (PALS) is the name of this game. Employers are looking for people they like, have the talent, fit the culture and can get the job done…is that YOU?

ITT Tech Closes, 8000 Employees Lose Jobs & Wells Fargo Fires 5300…Is Job Security Dead? The Career Engineer Says “High-Touch with Hi-Tech” Skills Can Help Keep Your Career Alive”

Virginia Beach, VA — September 28th 2016 — According to The New York Times, “for-profit colleges were a magnet for billions of dollars in federal student loans and grants to low-income students. In 2010, they gobbled up more than $32 billion, a quarter of all federal financial aid, nearly double their share less than a decade earlier, the Senate committee inquiry found. Hundreds of millions more flowed in from the Pentagon and veterans’ programs through the G.I. Bill.” In terms of the Wells Fargo fires, CNN Money reports “that they are now, hearing from former Wells Fargo (WFC) workers around the country who tried to put a stop to these illegal tactics. Almost half a dozen workers who spoke with us say they paid dearly for trying to do the right thing: they were fired.”

Hey TCE, What Are Employers Looking For in 2016?

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared! Welcome to the next 52 Monday mornings of the New Year. Forecasts are sharing positive job growth and hiring news this year! In fact, according to my, TCEJobStop there were over 800K new job openings listed 7 days prior to this post. Proof positive that companies are looking for great talent in this new year.  But the REAL question is…will you be one of them!

Never fear, The Career Engineer is here to share “What’s HOT in the Career Space in 2016.”

  1. Use of technological innovation: The ability to command technology, understand data and analytics are a big deal in the 2016 job market. It’s not enough to just know WHAT it is…you have to know HOW to use it…the RIGHT way.

  1. PALS is STILL King: Remember your reputation will outweigh a resume..any day!  So our TCE coined “Performance, Accomplishments and Leadership” aka PALS is still in effect.  Bottom-line, today’s employers want PALS. if you don’t have it, then you are OUT!

  1. Skills vs. School: Hear me, folks, a college degree is vital but it’s not everything. Certifications and/or “proof positive” performance of “in-demand” skills are what employers are looking for.  Don’t be paper WISE and skills foolish. In fact, I believe you should have…both!

  1. Mobility is Key: Candidates who can truly function “in business” with mobile devices/technology to work efficiently and effectively are in demand. This is beyond social sharing and Twitter.  It’s  REALLY about doing more with less AND still being ACCURATE, EFFICIENT and FAST. (Yep, welcome to the New World).

  1. Who is Hiring:  Our aging population has created a big demand for healthcare related jobs and technology to support that industry. But it’s not the only popular industry, keep your eyes open for other growing sectors listed in this article Top 30 Fastest Growing Industries.
