TCE Shares “THE REAL SCOOP ON PERISCOPE”

“Let’s Talk About PERISCOPE ETIQUETTE, TIPS, TRICKS & TRENDS”

The Career Engineer

So what’s the SCOOP on PERISCOPE?  Well as an addicted “scoper” (that’s what we call ourselves), let me share my thoughts on this incredible new way to see the world from someone else’s eyes.

Periscope is nearly 8 months old with over 10 million users, and I am happy to be one of them. As an observer/broadcaster, I have commented, hearted, shared, followed, and replayed peri-newbies and the guru’s scopes. In all of my watching, learning and broadcasting (thanks for the hearts and follows guys), I have finally decided to share my thoughts about this amazing space that’s changed the game in LIVE streaming.

Feel free to comment, share and let me know your thoughts (oh…and I appreciate your follows @careerengineer).

  • Give Scoper Credit Where Credit is Due: Periscope is always changing, updating and growing (that’s one reason why I love this platform). With that being said, there are certain “Scopers” who source the NEWS before others…and they often share it (but that doesn’t mean you should steal it). So as a common courtesy: if you are sharing a news flash, update or “what’s hot” about this platform…give the original knowledge provider/sharer a shout out.  Don’t pretend like you learned this new thing on your own (when you watched it on someone else’s scope!) C’mon, I mean it’s just the right thing to do.
  • Like the HEARTS but LOVE the Followers:  Goodbye most loved list… and hello trending.  Welcome to the new deal which proves, yet again, the Periscope team was a step ahead of us.  Now we are made aware of scopers with (guess this) exceptional content, amazing retention rates and REAL value versus that gosh darn popularity “heart” contest.  Hearts are great and the original purpose was to let broadcasters know that their content was “on point and valued”. But somehow this concept got twisted into a heart contest, which defeated the purpose.   Sorry heart buyers…you got a bad deal.
  • Fakes It, Won’t Make it…Here: There are several concepts and values that are the foundations of the TCE Network such as: authenticity, being genuine and building REALationships (SM). Trust and community building are hard things to do offline, so you can imagine the drama in attaining those principles online. But now here comes Periscope…who’s original vision (no matter how often people try to pimp it) is REAL community building, being human merged with incredible technology. This is the purest form of diversity of thought from all faces, spaces and races. Now to that guy or gal who thought or have been “coached” to pretend or have an “elevated self-opinion”, it won’t work here. So try this novel approach: if you want your voice or message to be heard, just be “you.”
  • All Viewers…Matter! (Yes that includes the web viewers):  When I first started scoping I was told to ignore the web viewers and focus ALL MY ATTENTION on the LIVE viewers. In short, web viewers don’t matter because they can’t “heart you”. Gosh darn (that’s right no cussing) I was new so I followed to the letter the advice of the Periscope Gurus…but my gut and training told me different (note to self: listen to your gut). Now we understand that in most cases we are getting more views on the Web than in your LIVE broadcasts.  In fact my Peri-Mentor Alex Khan (Follow Him Now) proved that fact to his faithful viewers via FullScope.tv (analytics tool).
  • Periscope Tips, Tricks & Who Do I Watch: Hey as shared earlier, Periscope keeps up with new technology and trends. Here are the most recent updates at the time of this blog:
  1. Apply TV deal (that’s a BIG DEAL)
  2. replay fast forward/rewind
  3. Zoom (Not just for Apples anymore)
  4. Map 2.0 (A whole another level)
  5. Location myth busted (I will scope about that later).

I am honored to be a Beta Tester for Periscope so I have an early idea of what’s next (and it’s exciting). So, whom do I watch, grow and learn from on Periscope? Well, there are many great broadcasters but for me here are my Top 4:

If you follow me, you will ALWAYS see shares for these guys!

  1.  Ryan Bell (Creator of the official Periscope Summit) what a cool dude, another amazing guy who is all about community building and more.

  1.   Alex Khan (amazing human being, who is the perfect example of the right guy for this space, I could do a monthly blog post on Alex Khan #khanscope).

  1.  Vinnie Potestivo (We synced the moment we chatted, this fellow has a heart of gold and a spirit that matches… a true mover and shaker).

  1.  Mario Armstrong (Warning eat your Wheaties before you watch his scopes…because this guy brings it LIVE FOR REAL. EXTREME Technology content).

  • Money Does Not Maketh Man: Yeah, I got that from the Kingsmen Movie (get the Blu-ray). So…just because someone is a BIG NAME with BIG BUCKS in certain spaces does not mean they have character, content or value. In fact, at times it can be “just the opposite”.   Remember, they are scoping (just like you are) to explore, grow and monetize their efforts in a new market (let’s not get that twisted). I can’t tell you how many invites that I got excited about to actually join a scope with a powerful CEO, millionaire, Sales Guru, or inspirational/motivational speaker who attacked their viewers with name calling, extreme profanity…or worse. I even heard a very well know guru respond to a viewer about an upcoming event saying ”they are a bunch of freaks”.
  • Share & Tweet with Caution: Yes, broadcasters will ASK for your shares. However, be darn sure that what you are sharing ADDS VALUE and FITS your community. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been invited to watch a broadcast from a mutual…that when I tuned in…I had to tune out FAST. Their content, broadcast style and/or language use disturbed me (watching their other scopes did not help). The real bad thing about this situation is…what happens when I start thinking differently about the person who keeps ASK ME TO WATCH because they enjoy it …(hum just something to think about).

Bill Gates Shares, What High School Can’t Teach You!

collegeToday I am speaking before a crowd of 21st century 14 – 18 year olds about the future, work values and their job search.  As I was thinking about how this “new digital school” group of exceptional young people may receive my “not so ole school” delivery about the value of work…I thought about Bill Gates.

An ole school fellow that young folks may admire because of this mighty dollars and senses (and Microsoft).  So I recalled  having this “piece of advice from brother Bill” in my  TCE archives.  dusted this thing off and will share it today.  ( I will let you know how it turns out, if they enjoy it our fall asleep).  But in the meantime, what do you think about Bill’s advise to our next generation, is the below STILL relevant today?

Bill Gates’ speech at a high school about 11 things students DID NOT and WILL NOT learn in school

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try de-cluttering the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

TCE Says, “Let’s Shutdown Proof Your Career”

Don’t get anxious – get prepared!  Rumours about gov’t shutdowns, layoffs or 3rd quarter downsizing got you down? Never fear, the Career Engineer is here with  four ways to “deal with shutdowns”  and brighten your career outlook.  By the way, I look forward to your comments, questions and thank you in advance for sharing with others.

TCE Says, “Let’s Shutdown Proof Your Career”

  • Access Where You Are: Get a realistic handle on your career power & cash resources (60, 90, 180 day plans are a good idea).  Of course this is EASIER if you continue to REALationship network…while you are employed versus “the other way around”.  Check out our TCE FREE Resume Review

  • If it’s Broke, Fix It: Stop using a BROKE brand (Update.. the Update).  Repeat after me…Technology is our friend!…don’t be afraid to embrace it and use it to increase your reach and leverage.  So..give that ole resume and LinkedIn Profile a facelift…or the boot (it’s up to you). P.S. are you Periscoping Yet?

  • Always Have a “B & C “ Game:   Have you considered…Adjunct teaching, small home based business, outsource your skills (elance.com) or part-time gig.  NEVER place all your eggs into one job basket (that called dangerous). Explore your interests and think about several collateral markets where your gifts and talents can shine.

  • Bonus Connection Event:  Sat, October 17, 2015 TCE Career & Biz Summit and Awards Luncheon:  Tickets available – Click Banner on TCEnow.com (Out of work – compete for a FREE panel seat)

TCE Social Networking Etiquette for Your Career or Biz

Source Google Images

Just like any other career or business environment, the social networking/sharing space has norms, behaviors and a culture (especially for employees and biz owners). Violation or refusal to “get with the program” MAY affect your ability to build critical relationships in your career & business.  Yes, your online reputation and actions can create AWESOME deals…or move you BACK into the unemployment line.   The Career Engineer @CareerEngineer is here to share her Social networking “Go or No Go” relationship tips to help you change the game on Monday mornings!

Tag or NOT to Tag…That is the Question!

Unsure? ASK …BEFORE you tag someone (very irritating)

  • Make sure the person is “a part” the content, event, etc.
  • BEST ways to destroy a potential career/biz relationship online and offline!

KNOW the Rules of Engagement!   (Social/Career/Biz Groups 101)

  • Ask creator about group norms and culture (or read/comprehend group info)
  • Relational vs. Pitch groups (knowing the difference is powerful)
  • Read profiles, Google folks…BEFORE You Reach Out (time and sanity saver)

HOW You Share vs. WHAT You Share!

  • Social media spamming (folks will RUN from you)
  • Overkill of ambiguous posts that don’t fit a conversation (Big biz/career killer)
  • Walls/update areas are precious, don’t post unless you have permission

Got the Interview….Now What?

The Career Engineer

Got the Interview….Now What? TCE Top Post Interview Boosters

Don’t Get Anxious – Get Prepared!  So. you had the interview!  The interviewer seemed to be captured by you!   You are feel pretty good about yourself and sense that you “hit it out of the park!”  That’s great, but now what do you do?  There are some power boosters and pitfalls to be aware of that can INFLUENCE the “You are Hired…decision!”  But it’s very important that you use these strategies with care and the right way…so you don’t screw things up.

So here are a few TCE tips to make the interview waiting period…less anxious.

Thank you card! A REAL, handwritten, USPS mailed OR dropped off within 48 hours. Addressed to the decision maker(s) and make sure you mention an organic/authentic  talking point from the interview. This is one of the most “hi-touch” power moves in the industry…and so many fail to use it in the “point and click world of today”.  (Note to Readers:  NO THANK YOU? BIG MISTAKE).

  • TCE Tip: TCE is “anti” email thank you notes.

Strategic Follow-up: In some cases, a personal follow-up call can be a GREAT “get noticed” booster. Warning, this assertive strategy MUST be tactfully qualified by asking during your interview, if a “follow-up” call is appropriate. No one wants a stalker or a pest….so make sure you KNOW the difference before you call or reach out to someone.  But if done correctly…this smart move can demonstrate what you can deliver to the employer.  (Note to Readers:  Who doesn’t like someone who follows through?)

  • TCE Tip: A little scared, then leave a voicemail early AM or late PM

Don’t STOP on the Feeling: Stay in the race. Keep on meeting, networking AND interviewing with potential employers UNTIL you show UP on your first day of work.  One of the WORSE things a career professional can do is to STOP their strategic job search…based on a false, unproven…feeling.  Keep it moving and flowing…always.

  • TCE Tip: traditional and non-traditional networking events are EVERYWHERE…make sure you keep your buzz  branded in the right spaces.

You CAN Get Hired While it’s…HOT!

Let’s Bust Some Summer Job Search Myths!

STILL think that the summer is NOT a great time to start your job search? Don’t get anxious – get prepared! The Career Engineer is here by to share how to use this mythical DOWN time to get in LINE for your next summer or FT Job! So let’s BUST some summer job myths…right now.

TCE Myth Busting Time!

  • Camp or PT Jobs Only: False! Great employers look for GREAT talent all year-long. There are FT employment opportunities in the professional sectors available. TCEjobstop is showcasing both FT and PT opportunities, right now. Check it out TCEjobStop
  • No One Hires in the Summer: False! Summer is a great time to get your brand into the market place, while your competition is eating hot dogs and playing on the beach.
  • ZERO Networking in the Summer: False! BBQ’s, reunions and picnics are some of the BEST untapped networking gatherings. Plus you can still get connected at professional gatherings during the summer by using Eventbrite or your local calendars.
  • Volunteer or Summer Jobs Never Lead to Permanent: False! Volunteer work and PT summer are great catapults to professional FT work…and perfect options for filling in gaps. You would be surprised at how many Sr. level managers and CEO’s started in the mailroom or at the register.

TCE Bonus: TCE 1st Tuesdays, 6:30PM @ Aloft Chesapeake: Bring you’re “A-game, have your brand pitch ready and makes some career and biz connections. RSVP please to confirm you spot.
