The Power of Time, Talent, Treasure & You!

I had an opportunity a few weeks back to speak “as the keynote”, for the Financial Planning Day event sponsored by the City of Virginia Beach and the Financial Planners Association of Hampton Roads.  My goal was to empower the room with economic solutions, principles and values to help “John and Jane America” make smart choices with their money and to build wealth for their households.  Now, as a person who enjoys “spending” money, I was challenged to share fiscal accountability choices…that would make my accountant proud.  But heck.. I am “The Career Engineer” and like most of you , I work hard, play hard and enjoy having BIG fun; however, I want to ensure my financial posture…is SECURED!   Yes, there lies my struggle 🙂  So in keeping  true to form; I  shared our “fiscal, career, business and life  prosperity formula…the TCE Way!”  Yes, I am proud to say, it was a hit …so now let me share it with you.  Let me know what you think …and I look forward to your comments and questions.

The Power of Talent:  “You Can’t SELL, What You Don’t Know”

  • Now is the Time to Use Your Gifts and talents aka “knowledge skills and abilities” to generate multiple streams of income.
  • It’s Deeper Than a Job…it’s about transforming our thinking and actions to the mindset of a becoming a Career Entrepreneur.
  • Work Your Career Progression Like It’s a Business (marketing, technology, quality assurance, performance, profits and more).
  • It’s This Type of “Thinking and Doing” that generates income…for life.

The Power of Time: “Invest Time vs. Spending Time…There is a Difference”

  • You Can Make More Money, buy more things, even gain new friends…but the allotment of time is something you NEVER get back.
  • When You SPEND Time in a Relationship, you are in a consumer mindset (hence the word CONSUME).  When you INVEST time in a relationship…you expect something back (hence the word investment.)
  • ROI is Critical in Your Use of Your Time.  Be careful where you invest your time (people, places, data and things).

The Power of Treasure: “It’s Not What You Make, It’s What You Keep”

  • Our Economy has Changed, so Should We.  Financial sustainability aka as YOUR economic policy for your household …100% rests with you.
  • We HAVE  To Plan for Success.  Now here is the good news, you can change it, increase it, build wealth, tap into resources and create legacy.
  • Think About the Power 10.  By INVESTING and not SPENDING as little as 10%, (a dime out of every dollar) is a great way to build your future.

The Power of Now:  It’s Time to Make Monday Mornings….Better!”

  • Now is the time to ACT.  Make sure you INVEST your Time, Talent and Treasure to build your powerful economic plan.
  • If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes. Remember the universal law, “If there is NO SEED, there is NO HARVEST”. Don’t expect to grow anything if you have not planted anything.

How to “Define Yourself or Be Defined”

Looking for INCREASED  respect  or value in the workplace, your household or community?  Tired of the way “folks”  view you, your brand as average, mundane or always available?  Wonder why you are NOT the first choice for the best  opportunities?    Are you ready and willing to do what is necessary… to change all of that?  Here is an excerpt of the Power of Self-awareness and defining your brand  from our Book “A Mind to work”.   Change your game “right now” with these redefining techniques.

  • If you want the world to receive you in a certain way,  you must set the tone.  The power is resting with you, why don’t you use it?  If you want respect, command it; if you want honesty, don’t tolerate dishonesty; if you want truth, don’t be happy with lies, and only respond to the name that was given to you.
  • People will treat you the way you allow them to.  Define yourself! If you don’t, society will; for many of us, society already has.  You have heard some of the words, slow, dumb, female (instead of woman), male (instead of man), dislocated worker, unemployed, disabled, dysfunctional…I think you get my point.
  • Let’s not forget our part in the above labeling process (a.k.a. self-labels).  Many of us find comfort in those labels and are the first to use that category to describe ourselves.  We have eagerly embraced the terminology, limits, and lifestyle associated with life stealing labels.  I don’t mean to burst your spirit, but in the words of the late Malcolm X, as stated in Iyanla Vanzant’s, book Acts of Faith  You’ve been tricked!  You’ve been had!  Hoodwinked!  Bamboozled!” (Page 2/26).
  • Define yourself or be defined; there is more to you than a label and limits.  You need to set your tone, know your name and set your expectations. I don’t even want to go to those other words that people have responded to, well let me give you a hint to name a few:  the female dog, the other word for prostitute and the “N” word.  Ladies and gentlemen, from this moment on, please resist from responding to the above-mentioned jargon, no matter how down it is.  Now let me correct myself, if you are one of those things, please respond—accordingly.   Then the world and I will know exactly how you want to be treated.

Ask The Career Engineer – TCE, Help My Resume…PLEASE!!!

I’ve Got the Resume Blues!

mmw-veterans-jobs-v2Q:       I have a 3 page resume which I feel really shows my work history and all my accomplishments.  A friend, who happens to be a supervisor, reviewed it for me.  He told me it’s too long and that no one will spend that much time reading my book as he called it.  He mentioned that I must cut it down to (1) page or stay unemployed for a long time.  Should my resume be only 1 page? I have been looking for a job now for about six months.  What should I do?  Paula, L. (Virginia)

A:        Dear Paula, your friend may have a point; however, he could have expressed it in a more gentle fashion.  In most cases a resume should not exceed 2 pages.  However, let me first clarify the purpose of a resume.

1.    Everyone repeat after me, a resume does not get you a job; its only purpose is to get you an interview.

2.    If you are submitting your resume and are receiving calls from employers for interviews (in your correct market) , then your resume is effective.  Of course, the opposite is also true, if you are not getting any calls you may want to revisit your primary marketing tool aka “resume”.

3.    Style and visuals are your personal preference as long as your resume is providing enough “meat” and limited “fluff” showcasing what you can do for an organization.

4.    Resumes are very important, but also don’t discount the power of social media and it’s impact on your career brand.  We are discovering that some decision makers on sites such as LinkedIn are viewing your profile BEFORE they ever see your resume.  So make sure your online branding is powerful, error-free and consistent to showcase your value, knowledge, skills and abilities.

From my experience, most HR professionals have stated that they spend about 30 seconds on an initial resume screening to determine if your resume will go into the “call back” or “send the letter” pile.   You may want to find a format that will allow your “filet mignon” to reside on the top half of your resume followed by your “ground beef” portions positions near the end.

Power Pushup Note to Readers:  There are some recruiters and talent professionals that look at the BOTTOM of your resume first.  So again I say, make sure your design is selling how AWESOME, EFFECTIVE and VALUABLE you are… so that no matter where they start reading, you will shine!

TCE’s Top 10 Keys To Staying Unemployed (Out of a Job and Broke!)

A bona-fide TCE Career Pull-up Post:  I’ve just created a new TCE math formula for winning a great career opportunity!  Here it is — getting hired is 80% (Engagement/Human Factor) and 20% (Skill/Knowledge/Ability).

As someone who has help professionals to Get Hired and Stay Hired for over 14 years, I am truly in a STATE OF SHOCK, at how many candidates drop the ball with LACK of interpersonal skills and human engagement.  I am not talking about the 16 – 24 year old…this is “as my ancestors would say “Grown Folks Acting…a Fool” type of thing.

I know it’s EASIER to blame The White House, President Obama, Employers and Congress on the mythical lack of jobs, reduction in opportunity and the economy.  Yes, they have a part to play in this by sticking with the party versus the people (no doubt).  Hey, don’t believe the hype; there are opportunities posted each and every day! (Check out TCEJobStop for proof of that).  However today, I want to turn the conversation around a bit to the increasing LACK of career protocol or, “know-how” to COMPETE, WIN & EARN...a sustainable job or career.

In this time of sequestration and opportunity (yes I said the word opportunity) I am in a You Can’t Write This Stuff state of mind based on what I have seen (with my glasses on) from members of the workforce.  I would have loved to witness career ready concepts converted into REAL displays such as:  powerful presentation, self-driven initiative, follow-through, demonstrated performance and corporate/individual responsibility; but I didn’t.  With over 400 views in 1.75 days for (1) particular job, I can count on my fingers, a couple of empowerment-based candidates who did make it to the interview stage (smh).  This is truly a sad commentary, as I am sure the qualifications where there, but the lack of the human WOW factor prevented those skills and abilities from getting…noticed!

Now the moment of truth and hope, if you find yourself doing ANY of the below, please stop immediately.  If you are NOT displaying these behaviors, you are ahead of your competition by 80%!  Here is my list and good luck on your career search.

TCE’s 10 Ways to NOT Get HIRED:

  • Failure to show up for…(get this) a virtual meeting such as phone or Skype!
  • Lack of email management to check SPAM folder for interview confirmation
  • ERRORS ON RESUME — job titles, dates of work, emails or heck (no phone or email at all!!)
  • Post confirmation and phone screen, failure to SHOW-UP at physical interview (unbelievable)
  • Terrible diction, poor affect, lack of engagement, questioning the interviewer on why they have to show up for a second interview (oh these were degreed and a couple of veterans).
  • 15 minutes before interview, there’s a call “Sorry I can’t make it!” (Mind you, 48-hour window to reschedule…but heck let’s reduce that to 15 minutes).
  • Asking for $40K more than posted salary range, “because I’m worth it and I have all of this” Maybe so…but we are not ASKING for …All of that!!! (Yes this really happened)
  • Sending resume with different desired position title, someone else name (not mine)…yes that’s why MASS email blast are a poor idea!
  • Having your parent apply for YOU!!  (OMG…for an adult child…Yes this happened)
  • Winner: Not Following Directions, ESPECIALLY the SIMPLE ONES, like email resume here & don’t cut and paste.
